After four years Johanna Demker is finally ready to release her third album, at the same time as she's juggling the roles of being a managing director of the family business and a mother of three.
Johanna Demker was born and raised in Sweden, but she moved to Norway after high school to study music and has stayed there since. She was early a curious musician and genres like jazz, soul, pop/rock and the singer-songwriter/country tradition have all together built a solid musical base for her. This has also become the foundation of the songs she eventually started to write herself. Still Johanna is not that fond of genre definitions, but rather of considering each song for itself. It's the harmonies, the melody lines, the cords and the lyrics that fascinates her, and she likes to mix and use different ingredients in her own songs.
Her first album "Things We Do" contained the single "True Love" that was released in the summer of 2000. This became one of the mostly played songs on Norwegian radios this year, which gave her a Hit Awards-nomination in 2001. The year after, "True Love" was rerecorded into French by an artist named Jenifer, as her very first single. This version sold 2 million copies in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada. This opened new doors, and Johanna worked as a full-time songwriter for several years. During these years she spent a lot of time traveling between Oslo, Stockholm, London and Paris to work with other songwriters. In 2006 Johanna Demker released a second album. "Pictures Of Me" was the first project she made for herself for several years. Looking back, she describes it as if she got lost in the pop industry for a while.
After some time she felt the need to take a step back, to find herself again and her own musical expression. She had to put the "hit industrial-writing" away for a while to be able to focus only on writing the songs she really wanted to make, without any pressure, requirements of shape, content or time. "From An Outlined Silhouette" is the result of just that. It is a result of maturity that has grown and developed into Johanna Demkers best work so far. The songs have come to existance in a very natural way, without any demands of resulting in an album. Johanna has taken her time with inspiration from her everyday life and the people around her.
Most of the songs are composed on a guitar, some on the piano. The album is a mix of songs in the singer-songwriter/country genre with elements of pop, as Johanna herself likes to describe it.
Taking over the family business
Johanna really knows how to keep herself occupied. Not only is she an artist, songwriter and mother of three, she has also just taken over as managing director for the family company SASCO - the oldest company of development and sales of aloe vera-products in Sweden. This year the company celebrates its 25 years anniversary.
The whole thing started when Johanna lived in Minneapolis in the USA with her parents from when she was 11 and until she was 13 years old. There they personally experienced the great advantages of the plant, and the parents decided to bring products with them back home to Sweden and start a company. "We had the storage in the basement and my brothers and I often helped with the packing. My friends were always joking and said that "it smells like Demker". There was always a smell of menthol in the air at our place, Johanna says. It has been a great challenge taking over the company that now has eight employees and its main office in Uppsala, Sweden.
The new album
Most of the songs on the new album are composed at the kitchen table after the children's bedtime. Johanna says the album has developed in a natural way and that it has made her more creative. There is no doubt she has found the way back to herself. "From An Outlined Silhouette" is best to be described as a Singer-Songwriter-album in the country/americana-genre. This type of music has always been an important part of her life. Together with the producer Vidar Løvstad she has tried to make her own solutions to arrangements, without considering the "rules" of different genres. This has, among other things, resulted in an R&B-choir in combination with a banjo on the "Bittersweet"-single. She tells about this song that it was originally written as an R&B songfor Jenifers third album in France. When she decided to write her own songs for the new album, "Bittersweet" ended up on Johannas album instead, but in a very different version.
"From An Outlined Silhouette" has become an and melodic album, something the response from Norwegian radio has proven. Before the album release three singles have been released, each of them getting listed on the largest national radio channel NRK P1; "Distance", "Bittersweet" and "Change". Along with the album there will also be released a forth single, aThe rock-bluegrass-song named "Dandy". Johanna Demker is planning to tour with her new material during the summer of 2009.
